Open a current account without a residence in Germany

Open a current account without a residence in Germany

Is it possible to open a checking account in Germany even without a residence? This question is asked by many emigrants. Such an account is indeed possible, but only at selected banks. Applicants must provide proof of identification to open an account (Money Laundering Act) and this is considerably more difficult abroad. How to open an account abroad and what else should be considered, I explain in the following article:

Only direct banks allow the account opening abroad

Whether you can open a bank account without a residence in Germany depends on the conditions of each bank. Classic branch banks such as Passphrase, Yolks bank, Post bank and Co. reject such an account opening usually. Branch banks are usually limited to customers in their own business area. The correspondence (account statements, etc.) is often still postal and in a foreign residence, this is of course problematic. Unlike the direct banks: these have the clear advantage that the account management (for example, transfers, communication with bank employees) takes place online and bank statements are provided by e-mail or download. Therefore, the direct banks are much more flexible in terms of residence.

Checking accounts in comparison

A current account can be opened at Com direct Bank (subsidiary of Commercialize) without being domiciled in Germany. Another popular provider is the DKB (direct bank subsidiary of the Escherichia Bundesbank). Update 2017: With N26 I would like to include a third provider in the comparison. I have summarized the most important tariff details in the following table:
